Yes, the lower number like 5.42 will give you more top speed, but will also give you less acceleration and work the motor harder. I always explain it like pedaling your bike from a dead stop in 10th gear compared to 1st gear. 10th gear will get you to a higher speed, but it's a lot harder on the motor (legs).

So, it all depends on if you are racing or just bashing, if it's a tight track, or wide open. If it's wide open, you can lean more towards "10th gear", if it's real tight so you'll need to slow down and accelerate more, go more towards "1st gear".

Hope that all makes sense.

For racing 5.42 will generally work the motor hard = very hot motor after 5 minutes. For just driving around, I'd guess something around 7 is OK.
