Exclamation Question for ppl with battery zappers

Greetings - I have a Quillen 1500 zapper, and to be honest, I'm not sure it's actually doing anything.

I've been zapping some fresh cells, and although the process seems to be proceeding normally (the LED's light, fade and go out properly) I wanted to know if there is some sort of sign that the zapper is actually doing its job.

Shouldn't the batteries be a little warmer when I take them off? Can I put a multitester across the contacts to verify that a charge is going through the battery? If so, what range should I set the multitester?

Any insight is appreciated, as I'm a bit slow on the uptake as far as electrical tech stuff is concerned - but I'd really like to know if I'm sitting here going through the motions of zapping and not actually doing anything.

Thanks!
