I second (or third, fourth) the suggestion of a TA05 - good value for money, Tamiya is a sound brand. I've had mine for about 6 months and it is great fun. Takes a beating and keeps on going.
You don't have to go down the path of the blue bling for it if you are concerned about the cost factor, I've kept my reasonably simple, and it is fun to drive, and as I'm learning more about tires, suspension, diff's etc, it allows me to progress with this knowledge.
Ease of parts is a big plus for me in my area. This was important to me, but may not be as big as a concern for you.
