I think that is a good comprimise and should be effective for several years to come.
As for a motor only lasting a year.... How long do you expect it to last?????
Even with brushless I would be more than happy to get 12 months of racing out of a motor. I certainly wouldn't throw my hands up in the air and give up due to having to buy a $80 motor!!!!
