I've been using the same Gel Cel and cheap hobbico 12v wall charger since early '01 without problems. I don't even charge it as much as maybe I should.
I ..heh.. usually end up charging it about once every 2-3 races, and just plug it in at about 10-11 before I goto bed, and unplug when I wake up at 7:30.
