With t-bar cars I always bevel the rear edge 45* to a sharp edge. If I run a center screw I use a 1/4" alloy nut and after tightening I dremel it down to match the t-bar bevel. I have been doing this for 20 years with no problems.

By doing this you can run some pretty big gear ratios.
