To answer your questions:
The track is oval until around 6:30. At that time, Jim (the ProStar announcer) asks anyone who is interested to switch over to road course. This season, we always go in this practice sequence because our first race is always a road course. Happens, two weeks ago, it was announced, but no one
chose to switch it. So it remained oval until just before race time.
