turn the car upside down and there's a little slot there to tighten the pinion. No need to take off a motor plate.
And good luck seeing the set screw flat on the shaft thru that small slot once its moved getting the pinion past the belt....I opt for the convenience method...I finish the job a bit calmer that way.
