If you only have the one vehicle, then an on board temp gauge would be fine. I have used one for a couple of years and have had no problems. If you put the loop around the bottom two fins on the head, the temps are pretty consistant. I like the gauge because I can just look down at the gauge and see what temp my engine is running at.
