...Below are the warnings / advice that Novak now gives users of their HV-Maxx system with the E-Maxx (SOOO many X's)...
Updated Gearing Info For the HV-Maxx System:
IMPORTANT: Do Not Use the Stock Traxxas Emaxx Gearing or the gearing listed in the HV-Maxx's HV Motor Wiring Sheet with the HV-Maxx ESC & HV4400 Motor. Using the Traxxas Emaxx's stock gearing or the gearing listed in the HV-Maxx's HV Motor Wiring Sheet will overload the HV4400 Motor and will cause damage.
Please read the following instruction update addendum for the newest official information concerning HV-Maxx gearing. This addendum updates and supercedes the gearing information in the instruction sheet that is included with the HV-Maxx system:
DO NOT USE STOCK E-MAXX GEARING!
This WILL overheat the motor with constant thermal overloading that will result in motor system thermal shutdowns that will eventually damage the motor’s magnet & rotor.
This type of damage will NOT be covered under warranty!
Use the following gear ratios instead of the ones listed in the instruction manual on the HV MOTOR/WIRING SHEET. If you do not gear the E-Maxx correctly, motor damage will occur!
Batteries Final Gear Ratio*
Spur Gear Pinion Gear (no lower than) two 6-cell packs
24.5 : 1 (2nd gear)
70 14
74 15
two 7-cell packs 28.6 : 1 (2nd gear)
70 12
76 13
*These gear ratios are based on using the stock size tires. If you are using larger than stock tires, the gear ratio MUST BE INCREASED accordingly (bigger spur gear or smaller pinion gear).
This gearing will give the E-Maxx better acceleration, better lap times at the track, and the motor will run cooler. The main concern is to avoid overloading the motor to the point the system goes into thermal shut-down. If thermal shut-down occurs, go down 1 or 2 teeth on the pinion, or go up 2 or 3 teeth on the spur. Airflow over the motor also makes a huge difference for overheating problems.
If gearing the truck up for speed runs, just don’t run it to the point of thermal shut-down.
E-Maxx Hop-Up Update: Metal transmission idler gears are part#13407 from UnlimitedEngineering.com
...You can read from this that Novak is quite concerned about upgrading the trucks to handle the beast they have created...Mamba has also told us that the E-Maxx being used to test the Monster Maxx is essentially 'full-metal-jacket), weighs a ton and has full metal drivetrain...
...You can also read above that Novak recommends the metal idler gear from Unlimited Engineering...
...Elsewhere on Novak they also advice the use of the following parts...
Recommended Emaxx Upgrades:
"After extensive testing, we've found that the high power output of the HV-Maxx can be too much for some of the stock Emaxx components depending on how the truck is driven. We used the following performance upgrades for more aggressive driving or racing conditions, and recommend them to anyone who is running an HV-Maxx in an Emaxx. (Note: Not all of the upgrades are 'required', but in the long run, we've found that it makes for a more enjoyable truck)."
Company Part # Part Description
Unlimited Engineering 13407 Super-Maxx Steel Idler Gear
Robinson Racing 8172 Heavy Duty Slipper - Comes with 72spur

MIP (choose one) 1485 Front/Rear CVD Kit - original size arms
(you need two)
1525 Front/Rear CVD Kit -wider 2.5 suspension arms (you need two)
...I figure that instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, that we take a leaf from the E-Maxx notebook and look towards fitting a similar drivetrain...
...Step into the limelight please Kershaw Designs Thanks to Kershaw's recent releases and their ongoing R&D into what makes the E-Sav tick, we ALREADY have the right components coming to us...Kershaw ALREADY knows what is going to happen and has taken steps to keep us all running on these UBER-systems that will soon be arriving on our work benches...
