with stock motors I never spray the can, just the armature and a little bit on the commutator, let it all dry off then clean the commutator with a cotton bud then skim it up
Seeing as that process is too difficult with a 540 (and not legal too!) I am a bit wary of motor spray on 540s too, but you dont have much choice really as commutator drops on a sealed can motor will just eat into the commutator and will burn onto it
