There is very few things in vehicle dynamics that are simple tru false questions.
The closer the a-arms are together and the longer they are, the less the roll stiffness of the vehicle is. This is great for offroad and low traction tracks, but high traction applications can benefit from shorter arms and a greater space between the pivot points.

If you widen out the arms, you can get more travel. You have to watch out for driveshaft plunge. But both up and down travel are tuning aids, it's not a black & white more is better kinda thing. Example, our track has quite a few jumps in the middle of corners and is very bumpy. I have reduced the downtravel of my 8ight because when the car unloads at the top of the jump while corning, and hits a bump, the car isnt as high off the ground therefore the CG is lower, and it keeps it from flipping over.
