Some people recommend taking the engine apart to inspect it for any debris leftover from the manufacturing process. It also gives you the opporunity to inspect tolerances, see how much play everything has and what all the surfaces look like (take a photo if you can). That's good for "before" and "after" type comparisons - especially if you encounter any major problems with the engine - like overheating, essessive wear, bearing failure, really bad front bearing leakage, etc, etc.

It's always a good idea to take your engines apart and inspect them on a regular basis. The more you get use to what the insides of your engines are suppose to look like, the better you'll know when there is some issue that you need to address.
