Sounds like it was all too tight, If the spur was tight that would explain the crappy run times, and the trannys really seam to be a crap shoot.
We have 3 cars we play around with, Ive only replaced my tranny once, our parts car never and my Pops has done his a few times and just glued it all and made one that just pushes both wheels the same.
