Try to start with a high gear ratio number like 7.0, then bring it down if you hear the motor at the same rpm still trying to get to the end of the straight. The heat could also tell you, but more importantly listen.

As for battery hold downs. I like a product by Dan's, Dans battery straps are great for every day use, but for nationals type racing then tape's the only way to go!!!
