Gyro technology has changed a lot in the last 15 years. He shouldnt have any problems with it at all. There are several people running these insane speed run cars, that are running them.
My friend Matt Shumaker is running a high end Futaba gyro and he swears by it. In this picture you can see the gyro (the little silver thing way in the front):
