I've heard a lot about them doing virtually nothing and often causing problems because they can block the holes in the motor can. A guy at my club uses one in his TC3 though and says he had overheating problems when he didn't use one, now his motor runs a lot cooler
Another option to a heatsink is a little trick that I picked up from the off-road guys. They use a wet shammy with velcro attached to it, cut to wrap around the motor. Alll you do is soak it in really cold water and then wrap it around your motor prior to a run.
Be careful since I have steam cleaned a motor this way and it did not work properly after that...LOL
