I like the steel pinions because they do last longer, but not weight. We race in a parking lot, lots of small pebbles. We try to blow the lot the best we can. With the aluminum pinions, they really get damaged and wear fast.
I would think the plastic spur gear would wear off first then either the alu. Theoritically, when small pebbles goes inbetween plastic and alu, the plastic would be the one that is affected first, not the alu. Just applying my ole sch theory, maybe my teacher had taught me wrong?
