Head Shimming

Have you ever posted anything or saw anything related to head shimming and what the rule of thumb may be ??????
When Brad and I went to Vegas to test I went through 5 glow plugs (mc-59)and then a few (mc 9's) until he suggested putting a shim under the head.
The way I understand it, is that, adding shims will "decrease" low end power and removing shims may "add" low end power , however, at the risk of glow plug destruction.
Any Comments ?????
