If you measure effectiveness by gear ratio selection, then 64 pitch offers more options. The car will sound quieter and some folks think they are more efficient at laying down power.
I use 48 pitch outdoors because the spurs don't strip as easily. I use 64p on carpet.
I always recommend that newcomers to racing start with 48p because they are easier to mesh and are more durable.
