Those are plastic rings that snap over the diff assembly on both sides of the spur gear to help keep dirt from getting in the diff. The spur gear you use needs to have the lip for those to snap over. Kimbrough gears work with them.

I have a couple sets of those covers, but I race indoors and haven't used them in 3 years. Seems they would be helpful outside.
