the car rolls because as you lean the shock in you decrease the stiffness of the shock, both oil and spring. you also decrease the linearity (softer initially, then ramps up).
this can be a valuable tool for bumps. it can also simulate a softer spring to a degree, since the spring may be initially as soft as the next step spring, but get a little stiffer with travel.
