You are correct....you dont need that spacer...but you must make sure you have correct gap setting...once that is done...add shims to eliminate your endplay..you only want about .01 endplay....if your clutch is locking up chances are youve added too many shims....and if you have the spacer before the flywheel that would make it even worse.....hope ths helps
remeber gap is very important .4 to .6 max i wouldnt go any further
