So offroad requires finesse and a throttle curve, and brushless can't deliver? I'm sure I read somewhere that the 2006 National Championship in offroad was won with a brushless motor.....

Brushes or brushless, either way you can have competitive power and smooth delivery. Choose according to your preference.

There are plenty of people running both Novak and LRP systems and who are delighted with them. I've been running a novak gtb system since march and it's been trouble free and maintenance free.
