Default making a Discharger?

hey, before any one says i did a search for info on this forum and searched the web.
im using gp 3700 all my local guys use zero-v discharge trays, i had a look and apart from wireing up a led it is just a resistors in series to a cell.
so of course i want to make one ive found battery clamps (check out tower hobbies novak is now selling there tabs off the smart tray) which means all i need is a non-conductive tray probably just perspex and the resistors does this al sound right? can u damage cells by leaving them in a resistor discharger like this?
this is only for my gp3700 i have new East Power cells and iwill not dicsharge them like this they will be put on the smart tray.
any help would be great.
i checked out Sanj's yokomo RC page before u ask
