the usual cause of this from what i've seen is overtiming the motor - i ran an 8x2 @ 24deg on a mid sized track and had the same thing happen.
the motor still works fine, i just go gentle with it, clubdays, 12th scale etc.
mine was ~5 runs old when it happened too, still going strong after a few months in the 12th scale though
