If you use a wheel nut wrench to spin your wheels while you wipe it on. Covers evenly, doesn't fly in your face or mouth, and doesn't drip all over your pit table. If you use a shop towel to wipe it off, for those who do that, then you won't get it on your skin.
Now the inhalation...Well heck if the cigarettes, meth or pot I smoked as a youth didn't kill me I think I can take a day at the track...Granted after two days strait at SoCal I do get dizzy, but that place smells like a warm can of wintergreen oil....LOL
A coupel days at a big race with care taken to not get your tire tractions all over the place you remove about 99% of the hazard.
Your lungs heal very quick if you not standing around huffing the fumes...
