So by this logic at some point proto-chickens got busy and had live young, then soft shell reptilian eggs and finally the hard eggs we see today. That makes sense....excellent!

This makes sense from a female survival standpoint. Pregger chickens may have been more vulnerable to predators. Popping out eggs and stashing them was a better survival option.
