I break in my motors by letting them run with no load at two cells (with alligator clips and an old pack) or with a motor checker at approx 2volts untill there are wear marks on the entire brush face of both brushes. This is usually after 10 minutes, but may take longer.
As a newbee to electric, I'd advise you not to concern yourself with comm drops. If used the wrong way, they will give you only headaches.
I use brake cleaner for motorspray, although it's not 100% the same. It does the job for me.
