I could be wrong, but from the sound of it I suspect he has a soldering GUN, not an iron(a soldering gun can be as high as 200 watts, but you generally don't see irons over 120 watts), & if I'm right, that's most likely why he has trouble. The tips on guns simply don't have NEARLY enough sufface area to conduct heat quickly to the surfaces being connected, so it becomes difficult to solder items that have a significant area(like battery bars to cells). The more surface area in the tip of your iron, the better it'll work for our kind of tasks, & with a good tip, you can get it done safely with as little as 40 watts of power in the iron(but you do have to be careful with that level of wattage, gotta do it right the first try & have to give it a few more seconds after each connection for it to heat up properly again).....
