Temp Guns
Data brings up a good point about temp guns. But the Exergen is still by far the most accurate and consistant. Especially when working in max mode. In max mode it measures all temps in the focal point of its view point, and displays only max temp read. Even if the cone is 1/2 inch from glow plug it measures all temps within that 1/2 inch area below. I did read that it is not necessary for the temp cone to be right on contact with the item being measured. The instructions state that the readings will only be off a degree or two. That works for me. The focal point of some of the $30.00 temp guns isn't even close and consistant with the exergens, and they have no self correcting software either.
