I didn't look to see if the surfaces were machined but everything fitted nice and snug, also being a single part it felt very rigid compared to the plastic gearbox. A mate has commented that he had a bit of play in the layshaft.
Edited to add, just checked the layshaft and I have a bit of play in it, but also quite a lot of end float - I might need look at shining it a bit.
