We could see sensors go away at some point - I've heard high frequency injection works on motors with higher pole counts, and I've read about at least one open source ESC project dev playing with it and getting it to work with the newer 32 bit MCUs. Think it might have been AM32?
In the US that is no big problem because there you only need to run blinky with most spec classes and is a lot allowed on the motor as lonk it has the determined amount of windings. Over here Stock classes are run with motors with a locked sensor timing and many people have found ways to create more sensor timing out of it.
