I know the old school way was to use some kind of contact adhesive on the rim and the foam, let it dry and then reactivate with thinners to slide on.

I expect with time there are better options now? Surely not everyone is using pre-mounts exclusively and has some tips!?
i have been using the tire sheet, cut it roughly 125mm in length, then using super glue to glue and make it a donut, then use the yellow glue, old style on both tires and wheel, let it try, then mount it with cone in between the tire and the wheel by applying thinner and then slip it thru.

lately, i trim a donut from the wheel that i mounted, then cut the trimmed outer donut into tire sheet, redo the above.

and

and it will be cut on truer to round the edge and flat the surface
