A diode is a one-way gate for power. Positive will only flow through one direction while negative will only flow the other direction. They are designed to keep either positive or negative from flowing a particular direction. Diodes are pretty much only rated in the amps it can handle. So, if you wish to replace one, you will need to know what the amp draw is and get the diode that can handle that amperage.
