Yeah, which is it.
Yep, most track owners will come after you with sharp objects if you burn off excess sauce on the track. It makes the track greasy and damages the fibers.

Drivers should wipe their tires down so they're dry as possible before setting the car down. Wet tires take extra laps to 'come in' and make the track greasy for everyone. Using the square of carpet some tracks have does no good. Everyone else has already used it so it's saturated. Kind of like trying to wipe up a spill with a wet sponge.
