So what method is being used to make sure the car steers equally when using a spool?
I disagree completely that it gets close enough. The spool can make a circle vary immensely. 2' one time around and 4' the next. Not nearly accurate enough. And if your track is tight, crossing the groove in the carpet affects how much crab walking the car does making the the effect worse.
Steering equally with a spool is done the same as with a diff. Balance, front spring droop, camber, tweak, endpoints. And always set tweak with fresh cut tires so they are the same size.
