The smaller hole piston will provide more pack on landing and respond quicker to driver input. You trade off stability for better landing characteristics.

As a rule of thumb I've heard every .1 change in piston hole size is similar to a 5wt oil change. So 35wt with a 1.8 will be close to 30wt with a 1.7
