If you are planning to race stock I think the Hobbywing Justock ESC is one of the best bargains out there at just over $50:

I prefer to use antenna-less receivers, and would also recommend Sanwa or Futaba for your radio gear. The Futaba 3PV is a great budget radio and relatively light. I have large hands and had no problems using it though others have complained that it doesn't suit small hands. The equivalent Sanwa radio system is the MX6.
But, if you are planning to stick with racing you may be better off looking for a higher end second hand radio. Futaba 4PV, 4PX, 4PLS or Sanwa M12, M12S, MT44, MT-S would all be good candidates if you can find a good deal second hand, but even second hand they will cost more than and entry level radio. Ask around at your track to see if anyone is selling, and ask to try holding radios at the track or shop to see how they feel in your hand.
