1/12 cars are still extremely simple, even for the quantum leap in tech and material choice made in the last ten years or so. For people who race touring or particularly offroad, they lose perspective of just how few components a 1/12 car has. I assembled a new buggy last year, and it took me what felt like FOREVER because of just how many parts there were. I was a bit of a perfectionist, of course, breaking in the diff gears with polishing compound and all that, but I could have assembled probably four 1/12 rolling chassis in the same time.
Development is also simpler due to the availability and ease of use of CNC machining. An even moderately competent CAD drawing can be made into experimental parts quickly and easily.
As far as the attendance at a race in South Africa goes, I think that's a statistical outlier. Pan car racing will not be going extinct, but we could always use a boost in popularity. We have occasional flashes of brilliance where our hobby gets exposure, like this video with 12 million youtube hits:
BUT we are still an obscure hobby. Upload what you can, take people racing if you can, and of course, if you have any offspring try to get them interested and running.
Now if only I could edit the Wiki. There are some brain-fart typos in it that need adjustment.
