Think of it this way: For fast drivers, 2wd mod buggies run a 6.5 to 8.5 turn motor in mod. When you jump to 4wd, they drop 2-3 turns and run as low as a 5.5. 2wd trucks usually end up with similar motors as a 4wd buggy due to their extra weight and larger tire contact patch. Making that same truck 4wd would probably be capable of putting down the power from a 3.5 or 4.5 turn motor. Those motors are a handful to keep cool and are pretty brutal on the other electronics.
Also depends on the track. There are fast guys with a 13.5 that are putting pretty close to the same numbers as a driver with a mod 5.5-6.5 motor. The biggest difference is that those people that have the 13.5 motors also have to worry about weight where the mod drivers it doesn't matter.
Smaller tracks mod doesn't really mean quicker.
