You should be able to troubleshoot it using your other vehicle, so you are on the right track. I have never been a fan of Savox servos. I tried them in an 1/8th scale nitro car, and they didn't perform well for long. They were always noisy when they were at neutral, and they are notorious for browning out. A middle of the road Airtronics or Futaba would be my recommendation if you don't want to spend a lot. If/when you want to get into racing seriously, an expensive servo is a good investment.
