Correct me if i'm wrong, but I suspect you were using a normal thread cutting tap. Thread forming taps don't remove any plastic (or metal!) and lead to much deeper thread depths. The Tamiya tap is about $10, and others can be found on the market. The Tamiya one doesn't have a lubrication groove... so there's that.

Using a thread forming tap leads to much stronger threads than thread cutting, and I've not wanted a power screwdriver to install any screws on cars that I've used a thread forming tap on.
