I have no idea if it's necessary--it's what I had from 1/12 scale racing!! I'm also using a $69 dollar 1/s cheapo in my WGTR car and it seems to work fine too!! I took the Tekin Pro I had OUT of there because I needed a booster battery for it. The cheapo Core Pace 45!! $75 delivered seems to work better for the 1s!
I also have a Hobbywing justock in my other F-1 and it seems good too.
