If properly setup, plastic spurs work just fine. I’ve been using them for 20 years. I tried a Robinson racing steel spur on a Nitro Rusty one time; I wore the clutchbell out in 3 tanks. Hardened steel spur requires a hardened steel clutchbell. In some cases, fully hardened clutchbells may not be available for your application. You have to do your homework - not all steel clutchbells and spur gears are created alike.

And FWIW - more spur teeth and/or less clutchbell teeth = less top speed and more acceleration. Less spur teeth and more clutchbell teeth = less acceleration and more top speed.
