Pretty sure the stock gearing is designed for 2S, so if you increase the voltage then you would typically need to gear down and check temps.
Kinda sucks the thermal protection didn't kick in, regardless I wouldn't feel comfortable running a 70A ESC on 3S with a 4000kV motor which is listed in the specs, that just doesn't add up in my book because your gearing options would be far too limited
Other factors to consider are if you increased your wheel size too which would also put extra stress on the system.
Hey thanks for the response! So the Halix comes with a Fuze 3300kv motor which works well for both 2S & 3S. The motor does get hot on 3S in the summer of course, but it's great in the winter. I just stick with the stock size 2.8" wheels so no probs there. I'm keeping the gearing right about stock as well, maybe even a little lower than stock to help keeps the temps in check. I have noticed a gradual drop in power and speed over the last six months, which could either be the LiPO on its way out, the ESC, or, (and this is my guess) - the motor magnets losing their strength due to running it hot in the summer so much. I'm gonna give Horizon a call this week and ask their thoughts on the Throttle Punch scenario and whether the dual adjustment of this setting on both the Tx and the ESC could be the cause behind the ESC burning up, or if my electronics were just worn out and ready to be replaced as it was.
