If you run 48p gearing and get close to optimum fdr(close to the guys running 64p gears), then you need to play with motor timing to get back on pace.... We know 64p has closer ratios than 48p but you can compensate with higher or lower motor timing values to get the same results.
In addition, the 48p gears will keep better efficiency longer due to their durability vs 64p.... The 64p racers will need to keep changing their spurs every week to stay ahead, while you can run one 48p spur gear for years without any issues....
It is always the racer's call, but I only run 48p or 32p for all my cars, bikes, trucks, etc.....
