Well to be fair you do need to change rods a little more often! I usually change after the first 2 gallons and then every 4-5 gallons thereafter. Waiting until it breaks is usually a little bit late...
That's not bad. I'll change it on over revved motors and heavy stop n go raced motors much more sooner than later. On regular bashers or speed run cars, I don't find it needed as much. Your interval is a safe bet, though. I'm doing some testing and will not change rods on a couple of my motors until they break. I wanna get an idea on what kind of life the rod will do.
