The special bearing helps to push the joint closer to the kingpin, as that's one of my pet hates with the Xray ECS, is how much the joint moves fore and aft when steering. Having the joints closer inline with the kingpin helps to smooth it out, IMO.
Only ever run 52mm's in the front, so can't really comment on the length difference.
