Yup, they're smaller and lighter.

Use hard packs for cars. However unlikely, battery retention sometimes fails (less likely with hard packs, since battery trays are designed around these common dimensions) and battery can get out of the car. All it takes is a shot to the edge of an unprotected cell and you've got a short, followed by a fire.

With a hard pack, you pick your stuff up, put it back together and keep running.
